Joseph-Philippe Bévillard - Mincéirs

Joseph-Philippe Bévillard - Mincéirs

Now living with his family in Ireland, Joseph-Philippe Bévillard is originally from Boston. He studied at the Art Institute of Boston, just about one mile from where I live and you can see a number of his black-and-white portraits from the early 90s of Boston street and party kids on his website. His new book, Mincéirs is literally a world apart from his early work. It is shot in vivid color and documents the life of the society of Irish travelers.
In her introduction to the book, Peggy Sue Amison writes “Bévillard was curious about Travellers since he was first told about the ‘gypsies of Ireland’ by one of his past professors long before he came to the country. Upon arriving in Ireland, he was astounded to almost immediately see these communities firsthand, as he was driven by taxi from Shannon Airport in County Clare.
Bévillard’s images take us on a journey through multiple halting sites, indistinct rural landscapes and some settled social housing estates around the Republic of Ireland, not only giving us insight into daily life, but also providing rare glimpses of family rituals: weddings, christenings and funerals, which make up the bedrock of all Irish communities.”
